Artist Tools
Below, you will find tools to make art more accessible to children with special differences.
Milk Jug Handle Adapters

For children with limited mobility and/or difficulty grasping objects this simple adaptation to a regular paint brush is a wonderful way to make art easier. Simply cut the handle off any plastic jug and insert the end of the paintbrush into the jug handle as shown to the left.
Adaptive Easy-Grip Brushes, Crayons and Pencils

There are many specialty brushes, pencils and crayons available for children with special differences. These are designed to make gripping and controlling the tool easier for children with various challenges. To see and learn more please visit www.dickblick.com/categories/specialneeds
Build-It-Yourself Customized Easels

The picture to the left shows Angel Boy Artist Louis Vitale Jr. with his customized "easel" set-up. This simple, inexpensive method is ideal for children who need moderate to substantial support to sit in a semi-upright position. All you will need is a pair of scissors and two pieces of poster board or cardboard. Position your child in a comfortable upright or semi-upright position suitable to working on an art project. Cut out a semi-circle on the edge of the poster board. The section you cut out should leave enough space to fit around your
child's belly.  Now slide the poster board up to your child so that he or she fits into the space you have cut out. Use the second piece of poster board for additional support and prop up your new easel on pillows or blankets.
Cloth and Velcro Straps

Here we see Louis Vitale Jr. painting with the assistance of a simple cloth and Velcro strap. These straps are made with strips of fabric with Velcro on the ends. They can be used to secure the paintbrush or other tool to the child's wrist. This is helpful for children who have difficulty grasping and/or holding objects. These straps can also be used to assist children in painting with their feet!
