Information
Many children with special differences have difficulty communicating in the standard ways. Art is a universal language that everyone can understand. Kids with special differences flourish when they get involved in art for many reasons. First, it provides physical and occupational therapy that the child wants to do. Many times getting a child with physical limitations to stretch is difficult because the child is resistant. Art motivates the child to strive to reach a little further because they want to, providing valuable therapeutic movement . Art projects also give the child a sense of their body and how it occupys space.
Completing an art project gives a child with special differences a sense of accomplishment and it is wonderful to see how proud they are of their creations. The artistic process allows participants to build confidence in themselves and their bodies by allowing them to make an impact on their environment in a meaningful way. The color choices alone are a way for the child to communicate, and as they gain experience, their art begins to tell stories they could not otherwise share for any number of reasons.
It is important for people in the community to see the beautiful masterpieces created by special young artists. There are many stigmas about children with special differences that can be broken down through the beauty of art. Art allows people see how much is going on in the minds of children with special differences. This helps people get past the stigmas surrounding children with special needs.
