Fun Project: Nature Painting!

This simple and inexpensive project is a great way to bring awareness of nature to your child. This project is suitable for children needing all levels of assistance. This project can be done anytime of year!
To prepare take a short nature stroll with your child to collect interesting things like leaves, flowers and sticks to paint with. If your child is not able to get outside you can collect the items and bring nature inside to your child instead. There are no rules in art, so let your imagination go wild!

Materials
Paper, canvas, cardboard, wood - anything paint will stick to will work fine! Non-toxic paint, paintbrush, sponge or spoon (to apply paint...or you can use fingers instead!). Leaves, flowers, grass, twigs, bark, rocks, pinecones and anything else you find on your nature stroll!
Getting Started

As you are setting up your materials take some time to explain to your child about the different things you are using. This is a wonderful opportunity to teach your child about the plants and trees common to your area.

Lay out your paper or painting surface in a way that is accessible to your child. Use a paintbrush, sponge, spoon or fingers to assist your child in applying paint to the leaf, twig or flower you are using. Once the paint is applied use as a stamp by laying it paint-side down and pressing on the back, or as a brush. Using a slapping motion is also very effective! Remember, there are no rules in art, so have fun with your materials!
